![]() My solution: I can't use the stocks menu to designate items to be melted. Then, with a smelter set to "Melt a metal object" on repeat, the dwarves went to work. I found out later that mass designation works as well. ![]() From there, I used loo and unforbid them and marked each individual item manually for melting. The game needs to be unpaused, and that dwarf needs to change jobs or set down the object before autodump can work for that item). None were claimed, all were available (dfhack will reject dumping an item if a dwarf is going to grab it, or is already holding it. I marked them for dumping, and dumped 'em all in one spot. I didn't want to search through all my stockpiles for the four individual helmets and various weapons that I wanted to melt, so I used dfhack's autodump feature. Initially, by group (all copper helms, for instance) and then individually by expanding that menu. I was designating things to be melted from the stocks menu. Why can't I melt stuff? I go into the stocks screen, I mark stuff to melt and then I go to my smelter and set a "melt an object" task on repeat. However, to make it into coke, you need fuel, which means you're going to need to make at least one unit of charcoal from burning wood in a wood furnace. Including a wood furnace can be extremely useful here, allowing you to turn logs into fuel much more cheaply than bringing coke, while bars of ash are inexplicably magma-safe building "materials.Want to start playing? Read this sidebar! 1 LaChouette 5:55am If the coal you have is bituminous coal, you need to make it into coke at the smelter to use it as fuel. But when I go to the smelter, the 'Tetahedrite' option is red. This value is determined by both the value of the material used in its construction, as well as the quality of both the architect's and builder's efforts.įor players trying to maximize the value of their embark points, you may wish to avoid bringing finished battle axes or picks, choosing instead to bring metal ore and fuel with you, so you can forge them yourself. on: August 22, 2012, 09:39:26 pm My mason has a fey mood for bones, stone and metal bars. If all options in a smelter are red, there are three possible scenarios to explain why: No fuel - find/buy coke or turn wood into charcoal at a wood furnace. The overall value of the wood furnace building helps determine the strength of the good thought dwarves receive when admiring it. A dwarf must have the 'Furnace Operator' labor enabled to use the smelter, and all smelter tasks require a bar of fuel. ![]() Strangely enough, charcoal and coke are valid mason's materials for building a wood furnace, since their ignition point is above the cutoff for fire safety. Once you designate a spot for your wood furnace to be built, a building designer will bring the material to the site and design the building before the actual mason (for stone or glass furnaces) or metalworker (for metal furnaces) comes along and builds it. Wood furnaces can be built from any fire-safe material. As with all buildings that require an architect, passing dwarves may admire wood furnaces and receive a good thought. Ash sees use in multiple industries, such as glazing earthenware items, advanced glassmaking, crop fertilization, and soap production. While it's hardly efficient, charcoal serves as the most ubiquitous form of fuel available to run a metal industry on. Unlike the other non- magma furnaces, a wood furnace does not require fuel to operate.Īny dwarf with the wood burner labor enabled can burn a single log in order to produce either ash or charcoal. A wood furnace is a specialized form of furnace designed to burn fresh wood. ![]()
